Taking a litter of Colorado Mountain Dog puppies to the vet sounds adorable in theory — and it is — but it’s also a full-blown adventure. This was their second appointment, and somehow, it was even more dramatic than the first.
It started with the leashes. Imagine trying to get six fluffy, wiggly puppies to walk in the same direction — it was like teaching kindergartners to dance around the Maypole. Every time I untangled one, another wound himself around my legs, while a third plopped down and refused to budge.
Once we finally piled into the car, things got interesting. One little boy cried — not a gentle whimper, but a heartfelt, soulful cry — until he wore himself out and fell asleep. Meanwhile, another pup decided to decorate the car (and her siblings) with what would have been breakfast. Thankfully, I’d had the foresight to delay their meal until after the appointment.
At the clinic, though, they were perfect. Not a flinch for their shots, tails wagging, charm in full force — as if the ride over had never happened.
The trip home was a repeat performance: crying, sleeping, and yes, more car sickness. I’m convinced they’d all be fine if I could just hold them the whole way — but holding six 25–30 lb Colorado Mountain Dog puppies while driving probably isn’t the safest idea.
Messy or not, these are the moments that make me laugh later and remind me just how special this stage is — full of chaos, love, and a lot of learning (for all of us).
